CARMENES is a pair of high-resolution spectrographs

installed at the 3.5m telescope on Calar Alto. The first study for

CARMENES was launched in 2008, and the instrument construction was

started in 2010. It was completed and installed at the observatory in

late 2015. The CARMENES consortium is now conducting a radial-velocity

survey of 300 M dwarfs. We have discovered planets with masses ranging

from Earth to Jupiter analogs, detected spectral features in the

atmospheres of transiting planets, and provided input data for refined

studies of cool dwarf stars. I will review the main design choices and

the construction phase of CARMENES, present the rationale for the

CARMENES M dwarf survey, and discuss our planet discoveries.
