An iMac can be used instead of an Ubuntu PC if the work group leader agrees. iMacs are subject to availability.

As for all computers provided by the university, administration and configuration of iMacs is the responsibility of the IT team. However, to simplify software updates etc. you can obtain a personal account with administrator priveleges on your iMac. In any case, you are obliged to adher to the net policy of the Regional Computing Center (RRZ).

Internet, e-mail, and printing

By default, iMacs are equipped with Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird, which is the recommended e-mail client. For the configuration of Thunderbird see the information on e-mail provided by Hamburg Observatory (<name> or the client configuration for university e-mail (<name>

Cloud and file sharing

Your personal account comes with 5 GB (students) or 10 GB (empolyees) of disk space hosted by the RRZ, called UHHDisk. It is very easy to access your UHHDisk home directory via the protocol AFP on computers with Mac OS X.

Alternatively, the Novell Filr client provides file sharing and cloud capabilities (UHHShare). Filr allows you to access your UHHDisk home directory, data shared by other users, and software directories of the RRZ from different devices and to keep them synchronized. The same functionality is provided by the UHHShare web interface.

Word and PowerPoint

You can obtain a university license for MS Office. Contact Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Zur Anzeige muss JavaScript eingeschaltet sein! if Office is not installed on your computer.
