Non-Gaussian Probes of Primordial Magnetic Fields

The origin of large-scale magnetic fields is not clearly understood. Observational clues of intergalactic magnetic fields lend support to a primordial origin for cosmic magnetic fields.  We find that the non-Gaussianity induced by magnetic fields in the CMB (cosmic microwave background) radiation is a sensitive probe of large-scale primordial magnetic fields. Comparing our theoretical results on the bispectrum and trispectrum with Planck observations leads to improved constraints on large-scale primordial magnetic fields. Stochastic gravitational waves produced by magnetic fields also contribute significantly to CMB non-Gaussianity and B-mode polarization.
