Bachelor, master, and PHD theses

The scientific focus of the stars and exoplanets working group lead by Prof. Schmitt is the study of stellar activity and its interplay with extrasolar planets. The group has extensive experience in observing and data analysis in the optical, near-infrared, and X-ray regime, and is a frequent user of international facilities such as the ESO-VLT, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the XMM-Newton X-ray telescope, and the Kepler data archive. The group has direct access to several telescopes, most notably, the TIGRE telescope in Mexico, which allows interested students to obtain hands-on observing experience.

The stars and exoplanets working group offers a wide range of bachelor, master, and PhD thesis projects in the fields of:

  • High- and mid-resolution optical/near-infrared spectroscopy of stars and exoplanetary systems
  • Photometric studies of active stars and planetary transits with ground- and space-based light curves
  • X-ray studies of stellar activity or planet host stars

Theses carried out in the stars and exoplanets group will be supervised by Prof. Schmitt, and students will be further supported by at least one member of the group.
