AnnalisaVazza Franco

It is rare that two of the highly competitive ERC Starting Grants are awarded in one year to members of one research group (group Extragalactic Astrophysics led by Prof. Marcus Brüggen). Annalisa Bonafede is a Junior Professor at the Observatory since 2014 and she received the grant for her proposal  " Deciphering RAdio NOn-thermal Emission on the Largest scales (DRANOEL). Within this proposal, she will investigate the origin of mysterious radio emission from galaxy clusters using radio telescopes such as the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR).

Dr. Vazza received his grant for the proposal "The Magnetised Cosmic Web (MAGCOW)". He will study the origin of cosmic magnetic fields using a combination of sophisticated computer simulations and observations, in particular of filaments of galaxies that pervade the Universe over millions of light years.

Interestingly, both recipients also happen to be married to each other. By mere chance the acronym of Annalisa’s proposal read backwards is also the name of their son. We congratulate Annalisa and Franco on their tremendous success that also reflects the excellence of the research conducted at the Hamburger Sternwarte.

Each grant is worth roughly 1.5 Mio Euros.
