Research: Development of a gas absorption cell for the near-infrared
In this work several gases are evaluated concerning their potential for operation as wavelength calibration standards in high-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy. Up to now astrophysical radial velocity measurements with precisions of a few m/s are performed only in the visual spectral range. This work aims on the extension of this method towards the near-infrared spectral range. The chemical and physical properties of promising substances are investigated. A subtance is suitable if the calibration standard provides many isolated lines and their absorption is sufficiently strong even for short absorption pathlengths.In the frame of this work the following gases are investigated: acetylene (C2H2), iodomethane (CH3I), ammonia (NH3) and carbon monoxide isotopes 13C16O and 12C18O.
