Local information

Detailed Travel information can be found on our separate page.

A detailed description of the venue is on its separate page as well.

General Information about Hamburg in much more depth is provided by e.g.

Location, maps and getting around

Public transportation in Hamburg will be free for registered participants during the meeting. Using public transportation is very easy and very common in Hamburg (and Germany). Since you will have a valid ticket, just be sure to cary it with you and get on and off the busses or metros as you like. Your hotel can point you to the next metro station or bus stop or you can find all details about timetables on the homepage of the "HVV".

Weather and climate

Weather in Germany is somewhat unpredictable. However, we usually do enjoy periods of warm weather during the summer months. July is one of the warmest with average maximum temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius (72 degrees Fahrenheit). The overall average temperature is 17 degrees Celsius (63 degrees Fahrenheit) and the record high 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). In Hamburg it also happens to be one of the months with the most rainfall and a rainy week cannot be excluded. Anyway, the weather in Hamburg can change rapidly, so be prepared for a range of weather conditions. Also note, at a latitude of 53° N nights in July are very short.

Changing Money, Currency and Tipping

The currency in Germany is the EURO. There are currency exchange facilities (banks and ATMs) in the city center. Withdrawals from ATMs will usually give you a better exchange rate than banks. Only the bigger restaurants and department stores accept credit cards. For small shops and charges be prepared to carry small amounts of cash.
Exchange rates : In restaurants, service is always included, therefore, tipping is much less than in the US. Rounding up to the next euro is usually a good strategy. For large bills add another euro.

Electrical devices

In Germany the voltage is 220V/50Hz. Check your equipment if it can handle that. Some laptops can actually handle 110-240V/50-60Hz.
The plug system used in Germany consists of "Type C" (=Europlug) and "Type F" plugs. See a comparison chart for details.
